World Blood Donor Day 2024 Report

Aizawl, June 14th, 2024: The Mizoram State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) and the Association for Voluntary Blood Donation (AVBD) jointly organized World Blood Donor Day, 2024 at Vanapa Hall today. Health & Family Welfare Minister Lalrinpuii graced the event as chief guest.

From April 2023 to March 2024, a total of 35,619 units of blood were collected in Mizoram. Of these, voluntary blood donation accounted for 32,493 units, with a VBD percentage of 91.22%. A total of 585 blood donation camps were conducted.

Minister Lalrinpuii extended congratulations to the people of Mizoram on World Blood Donor Day, highlighting the importance of voluntary blood donation in saving lives. She emphasized that the people of Mizoram have shown great compassion and responsibility towards their fellow citizens by donating blood voluntarily, ensuring ample supply during emergencies and medical treatments. She urged continued efforts to encourage blood donation among youth and other community members, recognizing their critical role in meeting the state’s blood supply needs.

The Minister also stressed the importance of awareness and education in enhancing blood donation efforts, ensuring quality and safety in the process. She expressed gratitude to all blood donors for their invaluable contribution to healthcare in Mizoram.

World Blood Donor Day commemorates the birth of Karl Landsteiner, the discoverer of the ABO blood group system, on June 14th, 1868. It is observed annually worldwide to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation. Since 2004, India has been actively participating in this global initiative, and in May 2005, during the 58th World Health Assembly, the World Health Organization officially designated June 14th as World Blood Donor Day to encourage and thank blood donors for their life-saving contributions. Mizoram has been observing this day since 2007.

Mizoram has made significant strides in blood donation efforts since 1993. In that year, a total of 3,119 units of blood were collected, with only 56 units (1.80%) being from voluntary donors. Over the past three decades, efforts have been ongoing to increase voluntary blood donations, aiming to achieve the following milestones over ten-year intervals:
